I’d been to The Park View for a roast a couple of years ago, and I remember enjoying it, so today I thought why not take advantage of the nice, autumnal weather and take a walk from the centre of town, through Preston Park, up to the Park View.
We booked for 2pm, and it paid off to do so. Although there were a few tables available when we arrived, they soon filled up, so had we chanced it we may not have been lucky.
I went for the usual, beef, but the girlfriend almost knocked me off my feet with surprise when she opted for the chicken.
Although it was busy the wait wasn’t too long, although the side of cauliflower cheese we ordered didn’t arrive until about five minutes after our roasts did. Still, no harm done.
The chicken itself was really good, a huge portion, and cooked well, still juicy and no signs of it being dry at all. The girlfriends risky decision to veer away from her trust pork favourite was a success.
The chicken also included a couple of pigs in blankets, which got the thumbs up. There was supposed to be some stuffing, but that was missed off the plate, and unfortunately we didn’t realise until we’d finished the meal
The beef, however, was quite fatty. It tasted nice enough, but the amount of fat meant that I left about a third of the serving, which was a shame.
The vegetables, for the most part, were good. The carrots were nice, as was the red cabbage, which was lovely and sweet, but not too sweet as to spoil it.
Parsnips were nicely cooked, but the roasts potatoes were hit and miss. Of the three I had, two were lovely, almost perfect, but one tasted undercooked.
The greens, for me, looked a bit anemic, as though they had been boiled or steamed for too long. The gravy was very nice though.
The side of cauliflower cheese tasted alright, but it definitely wasn’t the best we’ve had. It was definitely lacking on the cheese sauce, so although it was piping hot, the cauliflower could’ve perhaps been cooked a bit longer, and there definitely could’ve been more of the sauce.
It was a busy Sunday afternoon, but the staff were excellent and attentive. The pub itself had a great buzz about it, which for a pub the size of the Park View, is no mean feat.
All in all, a mixed experience at The Park View. Therefore, for this visit, it has to be a six out of ten. I know this is an anomaly, as I’ve had better before, and have seen plenty of great reviews in the past few months. We’ll go back in hope of getting a roast we know they’re capable of producing.
