New year, new pub! The first Sunday of 2018 saw us join a couple of friends and venture over to the Southern Belle.
We’d all seen a lot of glowing reviews for The Southern Belle on the local Facebook roast group recently, so we had to go and see what all the fuss was about.
We booked a table for just before 2pm (when booking we were informed there was a table of 20+ booked for 2pm, so if we arrived before them we’d be able to get our order in ahead of them).
Between the four of us we chose four different options – beef, pork, lamb, and the vegetarian nut roast.
When the food arrived it certainly looked as good as the reviews had said; perfectly presented, and plenty of it.
Once we started eating we were all on agreement that the Southern Belle was living up to the hype.
The three meats were all cooked well, and were very tasty – the beef was pink, the pork fell apart, and the lamb was lovely and tender.
The nut roast got the thumbs up too.
The roast potatoes were some of the best I’ve had in Brighton – the perfect crispy on the outside / soft and fluffy on the inside combination that you wish for.
The vegetables were all cooked perfectly as well, my only gripe is that there could’ve been more of them, especially green veggies as I love them.
The Yorkshire puddings were big, fluffy, and light. The gravy was great too, a nice consistency, and a lovely rich flavour.
We also ordered two sides of cauliflower cheese, and I have to say that it was by far the best cauliflower cheese that I’ve had so far.
Top this all off with excellent, attentive service and its easy to see why a lot of people rate the Southern Belle so highly. I’m now one of those people.
What a start to 2018! I’ll definitely be back later in the year.
9/10 roast potatoes.
