The Basketmakers Arms is situated in the North Laine, and was a winner of a Brighton’s Best Pub Award for three years running in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and was also runner up for the Best Pub Food Award in 2015. So with all of these accolades, we knew that we had to try out their roast dinner.
They don’t take bookings on a Sunday, so to be assured of a table without a wait, we arrived just after 12pm, and were able to find a table easily.
We went for beef and pork as per usual, although with no pork belly on offer, which is what most pubs in Brighton serve on a Sunday, there was instead the pork shoulder.
The beef was good, although it was a bit tough. I think that if you’re in a pub early on a Sunday and you order the beef, it can be 50/50 as to whether you’re going to get a nice cut or not. The beef that I saw being served after my own looked a lot pinker than what I had, so perhaps I was a bit unlucky there.
The pork shoulder was great, and the crackling that came with it got the thumbs up as well. With both meats we got very generous servings.
The roast potatoes were lovely and crispy, which is how they should be.
The vegetables were all great as well – the carrots and greens were lovely, and the red cabbage was really tasty. There was also cauliflower and broccoli cheese there as well, which was great – the sauce in particular was really good.
The Yorkshire puddings were really good as well. My other half said that it was the best that she’d had so far in Brighton.
The gravy was a bit of a let down, unfortunately. It was a bit thin, and lacked the rich taste that we’ve got from other gravies.
The gravy and the beef were the only concerns though, everything was really good.
It’s easy to see why The Basketmakers Arms won a best pub award though. It’s a nice, cosy little pub, I bet it’s great here in the summer. I’ve often walked past and seen people spilling out onto the street outside with a drink in the blazing sun.
Based on what we got today, I’m happily giving The Basketmakers Arms eight out of ten roast potatoes.
